Beautifying Your World with the Use of Window Valances

A special form of window treatment (decoration) that covers the topmost area of a window is referred to as a Window Valance. These valances can be hung alone but are most often coupled with (hung over) window blinds, drapes or curtains.

So what really is a Valance?

It is essentially a relatively small piece of fabric hanging across the top portion of a window. A simple valance is the most basic and casual treatment used and itís normally a slip of fabric attached to a rod with clip rings or pinched pleats.

They are often the decoration of choice when decorators are trying to conceal drapery hardware. However, they are not only used to cover imperfections in the window finishing but also to add softness, color, and pattern.

Another good use is to treat windows that are set on odd angles or those that are smaller or otherwise different from other windows in the space. A simple valance is the most basic and casual treatment used and itís normally a slip of fabric attached to a rod with clip rings or pinched pleats. Many times they’re installed over kitchen sinks or in other areas where floor space may be limited or blocked.

History has it that the use of interior design is somehow connected to the renaissance era. It was a period when the world of art and architecture witnessed a rebirth.

It was a period of experimentation which by the Baroque and early Georgian period had window decoration and designs become elaborate and somewhat theatrical with window treatments placing more emphasis on the pelmet and cornice to finish off window top furnish.

Window valances were popular in Victorian interior design. In draping or bunting form they are commonly referred to as swag.

There is really no specific material used in for valences, however, they most commonly made of materials such as Jacquard, linen, satin, silk, velvet and polyester.

Why use a Valance?

The first and most obvious reason is to make you home look more exquisite. Rather than having the normal window covered with boring blinds, a dashing window valance add a certain level of class to your home creating the ultimate attraction for visitors.

With valances you can add you touch to your room giving it your own personality through the colours and designs used.

A valance is often favored by the do it yourself decorator because it is so simple and inexpensive to make. It only requires a small amount of fabric, and a basic flat valance only requires sewing a few straight lines.
